Business Storage Solutions | Self Storage Can Help Your Business Grow

Business growth is a great thing. It is a healthy sign that business is doing well and making money but getting bigger doesn’t come without its challenges. For many businesses, growth and expansion equate to the need for more physical space. Renting a business storage unit can be a cost-effective solution for businesses who want growth to remain profitable.

What is Business Storage?

While storage facilities have not always promoted their units for business storage or commercial storage, there is a growing trend to use this cost-effective option because it provides a clean, secure, and if desired, climate-controlled space, without the stress associated with a complex and expensive commercial lease.

Additionally, a storage facility offers scalability of the units they rent so that growing businesses can increase space requirements at one convenient location instead of shelling out big bucks to move to a new location. On the other hand, if a business is experiencing a contraction, downsizing a storage unit is simple.

In the United Kingdom, self storage facilities like Big Yellow are promoting their storage facilities as business storage solutions for companies ranging from online eBay and Amazon e-tailers and specialty food distributors to corporations who need up to 5,000 square feet of warehousing space. Beyond the traditional storage services, UK storage companies also offer a host of add-on services such as flex offices, virtual receptionists, and forklift drivers.

Here in the US, business storage units range in size from small storage lockers and 5X10 units to much larger spaces depending on the storage facility and its location. Business storage in the US is primarily utilized by entrepreneurs, construction and landscaping contractors, pharmaceutical sales representatives, real estate agents and stagers, professional offices, and retail outlets.

Climate-controlled business storage units are an attractive upgrade from standard units and a necessity for any company who has temperature-sensitive products and inventory like pharmaceutical sales reps.

Drive-up access garage-style units allow landscape contractors the ability to get to their equipment quickly. Commercial vehicle parking spaces are often available to rent at storage facilities but look for ample lighting and 24-hour video surveillance.

Perks of Business Storage at a Self Storage Facility

Full-service mini storage companies like Metro Self Storage, offer business storage units with heated and cooled spaces, tenant insurance programs, and package acceptance with delivery to your unit. Typical gate access hours are from 6 am to 9 pm but if your storage facility doesn’t advertise 24-hour access, ask the property manager if they grant 24-hour access to businesses upon request.

Besides low-cost space, the biggest advantage business storage can offer you is peace of mind when it comes to security and the bottom line. Modern storage facilities ensure the safety of stored items by providing select security features. These security perks are included in your monthly storage fee.

  • Ample lighting
  • Staff on site seven days a week
  • Resident property managers
  • Perimeter fencing
  • Electronic keypad gate access requiring a unique PIN code
  • 24-hour recorded video surveillance
  • CCTV monitoring in the storage office

Additional security features to consider for your business storage solution include individually alarmed units as well as smoke and fire detectors throughout. Renting a business storage unit is also ideal for any business owner who wants to keep work and home life separate and avoid cluttering up their house or garage.

If negotiating a commercial lease and a large capital outlay is not something you are ready to do yet, renting a space at a self storage facility might be the right choice for any growing business. In big cities, commercial space can be downright cost prohibitive.

Startups who are unable or not willing to commit to an expensive commercial lease, and businesses and independent contractors who need more space quickly, will find that outsourcing their business storage needs to a storage facility can be the best flexible and cost-effective solution to meet the demands of a growing business.

Self Storage Makes St. Patrick’s Day More Fun

Even though self storage as a useful place to keep things while moving or living in a small apartment, it comes in handy during the holidays too. Self storage makes St. Patrick’s Day more fun by giving party planners the extra space they need for things like tables, chairs, decorations, and more!

1. Storing Party Drinks and Food

Storing party drinks and food for St Patricks Day

Before a St. Patrick’s Day party, snacks, and drinks can start to take over your kitchen. These party treats can be tempting. It’s hard to resist indulging in them early, leaving you with fewer supplies and a bigger waistline by the time the actual party begins.

Some try to avoid this temptation by going shopping on the day of the party. This strategy just leads to another problem, though: wading through a packed supermarket with long lines. You’re there with everyone else who needs last-minute party food and drinks. The best choices might already be gone, and they definitely won’t be on sale. It happens every holiday.

You can escape this scene and the temptation of St. Patrick’s Day fare by storing any unrefrigerated drinks and food at your self-storage unit instead of your kitchen. Self storage units can be as small as a pantry closet or as large as a one-car garage if you’re planning an epic bash. You can even get a climate-controlled unit, perfect for storing alcohol like whiskey and wine.

Once you have a self-storage unit, you can stock up before for your St. Patrick’s party and keep any unopened goods there afterward. Then, you’ll always be ready for a party!

2. Storing Holiday Decorations

Storing Holiday Decorations for St Patricks Day

A small storage unit can be perfect for storing decorations, too. After all, you only need shamrock and leprechaun decorations once each year. Why crowd your closets with so much green, when you can keep it elsewhere?

Then, before the party, you can simply pick up the decorations at your self-storage unit instead searching through a stuffed closet at home. The simplicity of the arrangement and the extra space at home will make the holiday more stress-free and fun for you. Your party would have the atmosphere you want, without the difficulty of storage.

If your St. Patrick’s decorations aren’t enough to fill a storage unit, you can always use the empty shelves for decorations from other holidays, like Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s. You wouldn’t have to think twice about getting perfect decorations for all your holidays since you’d have plenty of space to store them for the rest of the year.

3. Storing Valuables To Prevent Damage

Storing Valuables to prevent damage for St Patricks Day

If you want to host an awesome party, your home has to be prepared for a little damage. Sometimes this damage is manageable, like a dirty carpet or chipped cup. Other times, though, your prized possessions can be harmed or stolen in the midst of the fun.

Hosting a big St. Patrick’s Day party can be especially risky for your things if a lot of guests drink heavily (in honor of Ireland, of course). Your keepsakes could get crushed, or your computer could get knocked over. This damage is not only hard for you; it could also end up dampening the party.

Save yourself the grief and awkwardness of party mishaps by keeping your favorite things in self storage. Bringing them to a secure place is easier and less sneaky than trying to hide them around your home. Why go through that hassle, if you have a self-storage unit?

While a storage facility isn’t the next hot spot for a club or festival, self storage makes St. Patrick’s Day more fun and it can definitely make hosting a St. Patrick’s party easier. Besides, moving out your valuables before a big party leaves more room for drinks!

With a call to your neighborhood Metro Self Storage, your St. Patrick’s Day celebration can stay awesome for you and all of your guests.

Hiding Christmas Presents is Easy with Metro Self Storage

Whether you decided to opt out of the Black Friday madness this year or to jump in with both feet the big question remains—is there a way to simplify Christmas?

We think so. Renting a storage unit during the holidays can certainly alleviate the stress created by not having enough space in your home to hide oversized gifts, entertain friends, or accommodate out of town guests.

You don’t have to worry about long-term financial commitments either; many storage facilities offer flexible short-term leasing options during the holidays to meet the temporary storage needs of families and businesses just like yours.

Choose These Self Storage Security Features

Worrying if your belongings are safely stored during the holidays is the last thing you want to be thinking about. Instead, visions of the perfect Christmas evening or planning a post-holiday vacation to a subtropical climate is what you deserve.

Find a storage facility that offers a personalized key code access. Renters can rest assured that anyone who is entering the storage facility has a designated access code. Choosing a well-lit property is especially important this time of year because it gets darker much earlier in most parts of the country.

A well-lit storage unit can also help ensure that Santa (aka you) won’t trip when retrieving Christmas gifts or other stored items from a storage unit. With 24-hour video surveillance placed at the main gate and in a variety of locations throughout the property, the storage team can keep an eye out on who is coming and going at all times.

Did you forget a lock? Not a problem if you chose a storage facility that sells moving and packing supplies on site. Disk locks are believed to be more secure than padlocks, and the majority of storage offices have them for sale.

Types of Specialty Storage

There are many different types of storage, and specialty storage differs from traditional storage by offering a range of features and services that go beyond the standard 5X5 to 10X30 storage units.

Small specialty storage options such as storage lockers are ideal for hiding small Christmas gifts, and they can be used to store Christmas decorations after the holidays. Larger specialty storage can include car storage and covered parking making it ideal if you are buying your significant other a new car or boat for Christmas.

Specialty storage often includes a set of features such as climate-controlled storage, a business center with WiFi, and package acceptance making these facilities ideal for combining work and errands, especially, during this busy time of year

Desirable car, boat, and RV storage facility features

Security features that include well-lit areas, perimeter fencing, and video surveillance—all designed to protect your significant investment.

Some RV storage facilities offer covered parking or fully enclosed buildings to protect RVs, boats, and motorhomes from extreme weather conditions. Additional services tailored to RV owners can include one or more of the following: electrical hookups, washing bays, dump stations, and 24-hour access.

While RV travel is a favorite American pastime, storing a large vehicle on your property can present a challenge to your home’s curb appeal any time of the year. In colder regions, it is advisable to prepare and store RVs during winter months.

If there is a large RV, boat, or motorhome parked in your front yard, it might get in the way of neighbors oohing and aahing over your knock-out Christmas decorations. Moreover, if you are expecting out of town guests, then an RV self storage facility will help you free up extra parking space in front of your home. You and your guests will surely be grateful to park closer to the front door during the chilly winter months.

Must-have wine storage features

Wouldn’t it be nice to clean out the bedroom or under stairs closet that you are currently using for your wine collection? As it turns out, a well-equipped self storage facility is the ideal place to store all types of wine.

      • State-of-the-art security system to protect your investment.
      • The ideal wine storage environment where it is dark and the temperature is consistently maintained.
      • A well-trained and friendly staff who understands wine storage and can provide you with the assistance you need.
      • Choose a storage facility that accepts shipments from your favorite wine clubs.
      • The wine storage unit should allow bottles to be kept on their sides, and with little movement.

Climate-Controlled or Non-Climate-Controlled Storage Units?

A storage unit is a great asset during the holidays; it prevents loved ones from finding their gifts, it allows you to declutter rooms ensuring the extra space you need to host out of town guests and holiday dinner parties.

Deciding if you need a climate-controlled and non-climate-controlled storage unit for your holiday seasonal storage needs is as easy as 1, 2, 3. Simply answer these three questions:

    • What items are you planning to store?
    • How long do you plan to store these items?
    • Is your storage location in a region with extreme winters?

A friendly storage manager at Metro Self Storage is always happy to talk to you about your particular holiday storage needs and find a solution that works best for your belongings and your budget.

Don’t let the time and energy you’ve spent shopping for the perfect presents for everyone on your Christmas list be for naught. With a quick visit to your nearest storage facility, you can choose a storage unit to meet your holiday storage needs.

Keeping gifts hidden from loved ones, and everyone comfortable in the roomier spaces you’ve created in your home will make you feel bright and cheery. Isn’t that really what the season is all about?

The Zombie Apocalypse! Self Storage Can Save Your Life

We’ve all seen at least one zombie apocalypse movie about the undead taking over the world. However, unlike aliens, who come from outer space, where zombies originate remains a mystery as does why the zombie’s brain has only one program running: Eat! Eat! Eat!

Are you looking for ways to survive this Halloween’s Zombie apocalypse?

You can learn more about zombie behavior and survival strategies at the Zombie Research Society, we’re not joking, this really exists and it has loads of information to satiate your curiosity.

Here is our simple suggestion for the best way to survive an attack: Take shelter at your local self storage facility; it is the ideal anti-zombie fortress.

Find a storage facility

Before the CDC announces a Zombie Apocalypse find a storage facility near you. It will not only provide a stronghold, but storage units come in a wide variety of sizes to accommodate you and your group of survivors. Look for security features such as 24-hour access, multiple entrances and exits that make getting to safety a breeze, and motion activated lighting so you are never caught off guard.

How long you will survive a zombie invasion is anyone’s guess. However, with a little ingenuity and a secure self storage unit stocked with the essentials like water and food, your chance for survival will dramatically increase.

Secure self storage

From a last minute promotion that requires you to move across the country to an unexpected rent increase that forces an unwanted move, all kinds of emergencies can pop up at any time. Of course, as remote as a zombie apocalypse may be, we believe in the Boy Scout motto: “Be prepared!”

Metro Self Storage facilities offer a wide variety of features and amenities that focus on security features to keep your belongings safe because we think your things are just as important as you are.

Storage security features often include keypad entry access (zombies are dumb and will never figure out your PIN), well-lit facilities, and individually alarmed units. If there is a security fence around your preferred self storage facility, it will be one more barrier between you and a flesh-eating monster looking for a midnight snack.

Quintessential zombie survival vehicle

Unless you happen to have a military vehicle parked in your front yard, your best bet for the optimal anti-zombie vehicle is the cheapest moving truck you can find. Why risk damaging your SUV or truck when you are on the move?

Escaping from zombie warfare is a messy business. Whether you find a U-Haul or Penske moving truck, they will transport you in style and comfort out of harm’s way. Many storage facilities provide moving truck rentals on site. If you are lucky enough to have chosen a storage facility with a free moving truck then get there first. Otherwise, take note on where the storage facility manager keeps the moving truck keys.

Comfortable living during zombie warfare

Comfort and living might sound like an oxymoron during a zombie invasion, but as long as you are living you might as well be comfortable, right? I researched the most popular zombie movies of all time and found very few take place in freezing winters. What a relief for people who live in the Midwest states such as Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois and on the East Coast in New York and Pennsylvania.

Nevertheless, while there is still a debate if zombies freeze in the winter, you won’t if you know the difference between climate-controlled storage vs non-climate-controlled storage units.

If you still haven’t heard news of an invasion by the time Halloween approaches you can always find Zombie Apocalypse Halloween Party ideas on Pinterest. Ideas for a ghoulish party abound from how to make a zombie tutu to Marilyn Monroe zombie costume ideas, and Zombie Apocalypse Party Food. All will leave you hungry for more party ideas this Halloween.

Make a list of must haves then find the best storage facility near you. It is never too early to start preparing for any natural disaster and stocking up your storage unit with the essentials.

In the meantime, have a fun and safe Halloween!

5 Things That Need Climate Controlled Storage

When it comes to deciding whether or not to rent a climate controlled storage unit, it’s not just high temperatures that you have to worry about. When planning to store valuable business and household items, also think about moisture and humidity as well as freezing temperatures.

While most self storage companies offer slightly higher storage unit rates for climate controlled storage features, keeping your belongings from sustaining damage due to high temperatures, humidity, or freezing conditions is worth the investment.

Most electronics belong in a climate controlled storage unitClimate Controlled storage for electronics

The best methods for storing electronics include remembering that technology evolves faster than lightening, and if you put something out of sight will it be relevant by the time you unpack it from your storage unit.

Of course, vintage electronics are popular collectibles and keeping any electronic gadgetry safe and protected from the elements is a worthwhile investment.

Be sure to remove all batteries, and not store anything directly on the floor where it will be more susceptible to moisture. Label boxes as “fragile” and use bubble wrap or foam padding to protect delicate items. But don’t wrap electronics in shrink-wrap because moisture can be trapped inside.

It’s better to use paper wrapping, moving blankets, or beach towels that you can pick up cheaply at the local Goodwill store.

Wooden furniture should never be stored in a hot atticClimate Controlled storage for Wooden Furniture

Wood expands and contracts with changes in surrounding temperature and humidity, which is why a temperature-controlled unit is usually the best option. But before you store, prepare your wood furniture beforehand. Painted furniture may simply need to be wiped down, but stained, dyed, oiled, and waxed wood furniture may require special care such as applying linseed oil or a specific type of furniture wax.

After you’ve prepped your furniture one way to keep it protected is to wrap it with moving blankets and then shrink-wrap it. Also, plan to allow for space between items so that air circulates between the furniture and you can remove your pieces more easily should you need a particular item in the future.

Wine always requires a controlled temperature environment

Storing wine in “perfect” storage conditions is something wine geeks can argue about all day long. While that makes it impossible to give definitive advice about the “perfect” wine storage conditions, you’ll be fine if you put wine in a dark, largely undisturbed place with a moderate and fairly constant temperature.

When it comes to storing your wine in a storage facility choosing whether or not you need a specialized wine storage option or simply a storage unit that meets your storage needs depends largely on where you live. Talk to your local storage facility manager about how long you need wine storage and how often you plan to access the collection.

Artwork and family photos will last longer if stored in a climate controlled unitkeep artwork like this in climate controlled storage units

When it comes to storing your most treasured possessions, family photos, paintings, and art supplies are usually at the top of the list. These types of  items need to protection from UV exposure, heatm, and humidity. Storing photos of family, friends, and travel adventures are easy if you have a Flickr or Smug Mug account.

But what about grandmas’ family tree of ancestral photos tucked into an aging photo album? Exposures.com offers photo sleeves made of photo-safe materials that pass the same safety test used by the Library of Congress and the National Archives.

Storing photos in a climate controlled storage unit is a temporary solution until you have the time or inclination to transfer them into digital files.

Medical and pharmaceutical products must always be stored properlyphoto of climate controlled storage for medicine bottles

Pharmaceutical reps often turn to their local self storage facility to keep their inventory and shipments safe. Besides choosing a climate controlled storage unit, facility, reps must ensure the storage unit is clean and there are no signs of bug or rodent infestations. New or renovated storage facilities are always more attractive, but older facilities with good maintenance programs and reputations are also good choices.

Most but not all storage operators accept deliveries without an extra charge. At Metro Self Storage our friendly storage managers will happily accept deliveries and work with each pharmaceutical rep to create a plan for deliveries to avoid running into any issues down the line.

If you still find yourself asking, Do I really need climate controlled storage? We can help. It’s one of the most popular questions we hear in the storage industry.

Answering these three easy questions will help your storage facility answer your biggest questions about climate-controlled storage units.

  • What are the temperature ranges where you live?
  • What are you planning to store?
  • How long do you plan to utilize a self storage unit?

How to Properly Care, Store, Handle, and Retire the American Flag

Flying the American flag is acceptable any day of the year, especially on National Holidays like Veteran’s Day and Labor Day. However, every June 14th, we celebrate Flag Day to commemorate the adoption of the official symbol of the United States of America; the flag called the “Stars and Stripes.” This happened on that date in 1777 by a resolution of the Second Continental Congress.

What is the Difference Between Climate Controlled vs. Non-Climate Controlled Storage Units?

Deciding between climate controlled and non-climate controlled storage units is easier when you answer these three questions:

  1. 1. What items are you planning to store?
  2. 2. How long do you plan to store these items?
  3. 3. Is your storage location in a region with extreme temperatures?

I recently put everything I owned into storage after relocating to a city where the temperature gauge frequently dips below freezing during the coldest months of the year. I knew my items would be in storage for at least one full winter, possibly two, and that I was storing family heirlooms, artwork, dozens of books, and hundreds of photographs.

So the answer to the question, “Do I need climate controlled storage?” was a resounding yes. Like many people, I assumed that climate controlled storage units would cost too much. However, I quickly realized that the benefits of keeping my valued belongings safe throughout the seasons (whether bitter cold or scorching hot) outweighed any additional storage costs in the long run.
